The following is an April 18, 2005
update of the article, "Scientology
Treats Terri Schiavo as Though She is Already Dead."
According to Scientology doctrine,
death is marked by
the "death of the consciousness of the
individual":
The point of
demarcation is not death as we know it. It is
marked by what one might call the death of the
consciousness of the individual.
(Death
of Consciousness)
Michael Schiavo's recent
statements about Terri are consistent with Scientology's belief that the quality
of consciousness is the determining factor of whether one is alive or already
dead.
According to an article published
by the St. Pete Times on March 31, 2005, Michael Schiavo used to say that "his
wife really died Feb. 25, 1990":
Michael Schiavo used to say
his wife really died Feb. 25, 1990, when he found her collapsed in their
St. Petersburg apartment, unresponsive, her heart stopped, her brain slowly
starved of oxygen.
Doctors believed the collapse
was caused by a potassium imbalance stemming from a possible eating disorder.
The courts ruled it left Terri Schiavo in a persistent vegetative state, the
higher functions of her brain destroyed.
Michael Schiavo said it left
his wife unable to see, hear, think, feel sorrow or joy, remember or recognize
anyone around her. The Schindlers disputed that, and said their daughter
reacted to them and might have improved with therapy.
"Terri's emotions are
gone," Michael Schiavo said this month. "What's there is a shell
of Terri. There's nothing there anymore." [bold emphasis
added]

Indeed, Michael Schiavo recently
communicated that Terri was already dead in an article published by the St. Pete
Times on March 20, 2005:
"Terri died 15 years
ago," Schiavo said, referring to the collapse and cardiac
arrest that doctors say virtually destroyed her brain. "It's time for
her to be with the Lord like she wanted to be." [bold emphasis

Steve
Schiavo Parroted His Brother in Describing Terri
Michael Schiavo's main points
about Terri being already dead are as follows:
(1) "Terri died 15 years
ago."
(2) "What's there is a shell
of Terri."
(3) "There's nothing there
anymore."
Steve Schiavo, Michael Schiavo's
older brother, used the same words to describe Terri:
Steve, who was the best man at
Michael and Terri's 1984 wedding, told Action News that in his opinion, Terri
didn't die Thursday.
"Terri died 15 years ago. Terri's
been gone. There was nothing there, just a shell -- an empty shell,"
he continued.
