The Darby Bible Comparison

John Nelson Darby Added Pre-Trib Rapture Doctrine to Second Thessalonians Chapter 2

King James Bible John Darby Version
¶ Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2 Thess. 2:1

¶ Now we beg you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to him,
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

[At hand means close in time; imminent. Therefore this verse tells us forthrightly that the day of Christ is not at hand or imminent.

2 Thess. 2:2

Note Darby's doctrinal change

that ye be not soon shaken in mind, nor troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as [if it were] by us, as that the day of the Lord is present.

[The King James Bible says the day of Christ is not "at hand" or imminent. Darby changed "day of Christ" to "day of the Lord."

The dispensational hermeneutic requires two second comings, (one secret and one public). Therefore, John Darby altered this verse and turned the "day of Christ" into the "day of the Lord." (Cyrus Scofield followed suit in his 1917 Reference Bible.) See: John Darby and Cyrus Scofield on the "Day of Christ"

¶ Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2 Thess. 2:3

¶ Let not any one deceive you in any manner, because [it will not be] unless the apostasy have first come, and the man of sin have been revealed, the son of perdition
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

2 Thess. 2:4

Note Darby's doctrinal change

who opposes and exalts himself on high against all called God, or object of veneration; so that he himself sits down in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The son of perdition will exalt himself above all that is called God but he will not exalt himself on high, which is the dwelling place of God. (Psalm 113:5 "Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high")

Important: J.N. Darby replaced the phrase, "as God" with "he himself" and added the word, "down" to make the phrase, "sits down." This gives the impression of sitting down in a chair or throne. This is more specific than the idea of occupying in an official capacity.

Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

2 Thess. 2:5

Do ye not remember that, being yet with you, I said these things to you?

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

2 Thess. 2:6

And now ye know that which restrains, that he should be revealed in his own time.
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

The KJV states, until he (who now letteth) will be be taken out of the way.

2 Thess. 2:7

Note Darby's doctrinal change

For the mystery of lawlessness already works; only [there is] he who restrains now until he be gone,

Darby inserted the message that he who restrains the mystery of lawlessness will be gone. This supports the pre-trib rapture doctrine-- that all Christians (and thus the Holy Spirit that indwells them) will be removed from the earth so that the Antichrist (son of perdition) may be revealed.

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

[Destroy means "to do away with, cause the destruction or undoing of"]

2 Thess 2:8

Note Darby's doctrinal change

and then the lawless one shall be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus shall consume with the breath of his mouth, and shall annul by the appearing of his coming;

[Annul means 1. "to make or declare void or invalid." Its secondary meaning is "to obliterate the effect or existence of"

Darby  removed "the brightness of his coming and replaced it with "the appearing of his coming."

The Antichrist will be destroyed by the brightness of the coming of Christ. Darby's changes remove this truth.

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

[Wonder: Something that arouses amazement or awe. What kind of wonders will come about by the working of Satan? Lying wonders

2 Thess. 2:9

Note Darby's subliminal

whose coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,

[Wonder means something that arouses amazement or awe. Darby inserted the subliminal message that falsehood is a wonder. He did not word this verse to state the truth: Satan works false wonders.]

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2 Thess. 2:10

and in all deceit of unrighteousness to them that perish, because they have not received the love of the truth that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

[The KJV bible reveals that God will cause those who receive not the love of the truth to believe a lie.

2 Thess. 2:11

Note Darby's doctrinal change

And for this reason God sends to them a working of error, that they should believe what is false,

[Darby removed the warning about God-sent strong delusion and the result of it: the belief of "a lie," and substituted the much softer "working of error" and general idea of  "believe what is false."

God will cause those who refuse to love the truth to believe a SPECIFIC THING: "a lie." They will believe that "that Wicked" is God! This "lie" is spiritually catastrophic and Darby removed this warning from the verse!]

That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

2 Thess. 2:12

Note Darby's doctrinal change

that all might be judged who have not believed the truth, but have found pleasure in unrighteousness

[Darby removed the penalty of damnation for those who believe not the truth but have pleasure in unrighteousness. The word, "judge" means to pass sentence on, but it is not specific like the word, "damned." To be damned means to suffer everlasting punishment in hell.]

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

2 Thess. 2:13

Note Darby's doctrinal change

¶ But we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of [the] Lord, that God has chosen you from [the] beginning to salvation in sanctification of [the] Spirit and belief of [the] truth:

[Your salvation comes through the sanctification of the Holy Spirit. Darby changed Bible doctrine by making the verse say God chose you "in sanctification of the Spirit".]

Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thess. 2:14

whereto he has called you by our glad tidings, to [the] obtaining of [the] glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

2 Thess. 2:15

So then, brethren, stand firm, and hold fast the instructions which ye have been taught, whether by word or by our letter.

Most modern versions that I have checked use the word, "traditions." Instructions has a different connotation.

[John Darby brought new doctrines (falsely represented as "recovered truths") to the church. It would not serve his purpose to produce a bible translation that urges the brethren to hold fast the traditions which they had been taught.]

¶ Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

2 Thess. 2:16

¶ But our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us, and given [us] eternal consolation and good hope by grace,
Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

2 Thess. 2:17

encourage your hearts, and establish you in every good work and word.
